As a member of the 9th Infantry Division, also known as the Old Reliables, Joseph Fresolo fought in the Vietnam War. His division was tasked with protecting the population along the rivers and canals of the Mekong Delta. In his leisure time, one of the pastimes Army veteran Joseph Fresolo indulges in is watching Vietnam War movies.
A number of Vietnam War movies have been made but here are some of the best.
Oliver Stone’s Platoon was released in 1986 and won Academy Awards for both Best Picture and Best Director. Platoon focuses on humanity at the heart of war. Through the experiences of the soldiers in the field, the story discusses timeless themes such as good and evil as well as conscience.
Apocalypse Now was released in 1979. The Francis Ford Coppola film stars some of the most famous movie actors such as Marlon Brando, Martin Sheen, and Robert Duvall. This film is a study of war taking human beings to the limit of physical and psychological endurance.
For a lighter movie on the Vietnam War, it is hard to beat Good Morning, Vietnam, starring Robin Williams as an Armed Forces Radio DJ based in Vietnam. The movie released in 1987 features many hilarious improvisation moments by Williams.
